The effectiveness of baking soda as an antacid

By Natural heartburn home remedies | April 9, 2010

The old familiar orange box (Arm & Hammer Baking Soda) mostly used to absorb food orders in your fridge can also be utilized for other purposes.

Among it numerous virtues, such as baking, cleaning, eliminating foot and pet litter orders, shampoo, arm deodorant, teeth whitener, kill bacteria, disinfecting blisters, etc.,

it’s actually an amazing product that effectively neutralizes the pain cause by heartburn.
There are many reasons why Baking soda is used by so many people including myself, as a natural antacid.

I have been suffering from heartburn and chest pain for many years, I cannot exactly recall how long, but it would be safe to say at least 10 years.

Heartburn which in my particular situation has evolved into GERD, a disease developed over time because of bad eating habits such as

I would constantly rely on Pills like Rolaids, Tums, Alka-Seltzer, every time heartburn would occur.

Actually, I was popping pills after every meal, and I did not care about the long term side effects, the only thing I cared about was fast relief.

After so many years of suffering, I have learned my lesson.

Heartburn is now, a thing of the past. I cannot say I permanently got rid of heartburns because that would be lying. However, I have managed to eliminate acid reflux and heartburn by 98%.

And when I do self indulge myself in a hot spicy meal,( may be once every 4 months), to relieve heartburn, I take 1/2 tablespoon of Arm & Hammer Baking Soda mix in a glass of water.

Over the years, I have experimented with several different natural products, like mustard (for some people mustard is very effective to neutralize acid reflux and works fast) but when trying it, I found it to be less effective in comparison to Baking soda.

If you want to try mustard as a natural heartburn home remedy, the recipe is similar to the baking soda recipe. ( 1/2 tablespoon of mustard diluted in a glass of water.)

Without being too scientific, the main reason why baking soda works as an antacid is because of it’s chemical components.

The truth is Baking soda has some of the same active ingredients that react to acid indigestion just like most popular antacid pills or liquids sold over the counter.

Actually, a lot of antacid liquids sold over the counter has a percentage of baking soda in them.

At last, Baking soda is not the end all and be all for completely eliminating acid reflux and heartburns.

It’s a product I use that effectively works for me when heartburn occurs.

Heartburn should not be taken lightly and taking over-the-counter antacid tablets, will only worsen your condition over time.

Most antacid products sold without prescription, will only make you feel better, and I must admit they do an effective job of acting rapidly, but that’s all they do, they do not cure your condition.

If you are suffering from heartburn attack, and they become more frequent over time my recommendation is to analyze what you eat and the way you eat.

Sometimes just masticating more and eating small meals will solve your problems.

Other times it’s the food you take that causes an acid reaction related to your metabolism.

Remember some people metabolism react differently from others, it’s just part of human nature.
