Acid reflux in babies

By Natural heartburn home remedies | April 10, 2010

Today’s topic is about acid reflux in babies.

It’s just normal for mom and dad to be concern when their baby has acid reflux. However, you can rest assured, it’s a very common symptom among baby’s.

The muscle ring called the sphincter located at the end of the digestive tube is the reason why acid reflux in babies occurs.

The function of this muscle ring is to let the food pass from the digestive tube into the stomach.

Once the food is in the stomach, the muscle ring closes tightly, preventing acid reflux from backing up.

In young Babies, the muscle ring hadn’t developed completely.

In time the muscle ring will gain the strength it needs to close firmly and stop the acid reflux from flaring up in the digestive tube.

If you are wondering how much time it will take for your baby to grow out of acid reflux symptoms, the answer will unavoidably be: it depends on your baby.

Some babies take 4 to 5 months while others take 9 to 12 months. Don’t worry about it, they will eventually grow out of it.

However, if you want to be able to distinguish the normal spitting from the acid reflux, here are a few pointers.

While your baby is spitting up, if he or she is not showing signs of discomfort or being upset, then you have nothing to be concern about.

But if your baby is screaming, or seems to be aching during spitting, it could be acid reflux, even more probable, if this sort of behaviour (baby seems in pain while spitting) happens several times a week.

If the spit of your baby just trickles or drips out of their mouth it’s a normal sign.

But if your baby is forcing to spit up and seems irritated while spiting, example: forcefully coughing while spitting, this could be acid reflux.

If you’re not sure or you notice the symptoms of acid reflux in your baby, the best thing to do is to consult with your pediatrician.

Mom and dad should always keep in mind to handle their babies in an angle position.

When feeding, sleeping, changing clothes and even diapers, always keep the little one in an inclination.

30degree is the suggested inclination.

Research has proven that baby with acid reflux grows out of it faster when they are kept more often in an angle position.

Here are some pictures showing images of babies in a different angles and inclination position.
